Nu‘uanu in 50 years. The Flood is 4 feet above the 2019 sea level. Nimitz Hwy is barely above water. Downtown at the stream mouth is underwater and used as a traditional aquaculture fishpond. More green roofs and solar are in use. Half of Nimitz, once full of cars, is for cycling. The painting reflects on the question; “How do we use the ike (knowledge) of the Kupuna (grandparents/ancestors) to move forward?”

The same passages of the Kumulipo that inspired the Kanaloa board are relevant here:

1534. Ho‘iloli ke kai, pi‘i ka mauna
The sea rages, rises over the beach
1535. Ho‘omu ka wai, pi‘i kua a hale
Rises silently to the inhabited places
1536. Pi‘i konikonihi‘a, pi‘i na pou o Kanikawá
Rises gradually up over the land
